Swindon-based Lewis Watson has just finished his training as a green fuse celebrant – a 21st century approach to conducting funerals.
Green fuse celebrants operate in the area between the religious funeral, with its expectations of particular beliefs, and the humanist funeral, which tends to exclude belief altogether.
They aim to put together, in collaboration with family and friends, a ceremony that is dignified but not necessarily formal, centred on the life and interests of the person who has died.
Lewis discovered green fuse celebrants after getting involved in the funeral of a young friend who had died in an accident, and after being responsible for the funeral of a cousin who had led an “interesting personal life” that would have been difficult to explain to a stranger.
He expects to work alongside established funeral directors and is particularly interested in helping those who want environmentally friendly or ‘green’ funerals.
