A former senior star of several ice shows at the rink Link Centre was welcomed back onto the ice to mark her ninetieth year on 14 December, right.
Vera Sheppard from Wootton Bassett only started ice skating when she was in her sixties, soon after the rink opened, but went on to perform in twelve shows during the 1990s, left.
Vera’s friend from the ice shows Pat Fisher said she had a call from Vera to help her with her 90th year wish. "She said she wanted to go back on the ice and have her picture taken. It was a great opportunity to bring together lots of the people Vera knew when we were in the ice dance club and practising for the shows.
"I would write the scripts, Ernie East, who used to be a professional and is now 91, did all the amazing props and Jackie Frost produced dozens of costumes every year."
Vera, having not been on the ice for nearly 15 years, had to have helpers on both sides to that she could stand up on her skates, watched by dozens of children attending the regular Friday afternoon skate session. She said: "I was bit unsteady on skates but it was really lovely to be back in the Link Centre and to go onto the ice; it brought back lots of great memories of fun times with my friends."
By chance Zoe Jones, former British Figure Skating champion from 2000 to 2001 who trained at Link Centre and performed in several of the ice shows in which Vera took part, was enjoying the Friday afternoon session with her twin daughters Zarah and Zinia, pictured with Vera, below. "It was nice to meet Vera again," said Zoe. "Those ice shows were spectacular, a lot of fun to take part in."
