I DON’T think there is enough appreciation for referees in all sports, really.
There aren’t many people who want to be a referee and I try and remember that as much as I can when I’m playing, because without them there is no game.
They are going to make mistakes just like we do as players, every player makes mistakes in every game, and referees are the same.
The frustrating thing is when the referee isn’t consistent and that goes for all sports, too.
Last week at Telford I got quite frustrated because we did something and would get a penalty, and then they did the same thing and they wouldn’t get one, that’s where it gets frustrating.
Some refs are different to others, some like you and some don’t but I do always try to remember how hard their job is. It doesn’t always work though.
Everyone’s different and it all depends on the person. Some of them like to think they are a lot more important than they are and they are almost trying to be a teacher type when that really isn’t the way, while others are good at talking. Some admit they have made mistakes too and that’s a good thing.
You have to be polite and if they make a mistake you have to accept it. There’s no point just shouting at them because that just brings more penalties.
All players get annoyed and angry but we have to be calm. If anyone’s going to shout at the ref it’s going to be Ryan, that’s what he tells us.
