The very first Little Big Festival, staged in the Town Gardens, Old Town from April to September has been hailed as a great success.
Throughout the season families have had the opportunity to watch a wide range of bands from semi acoustic ballad driven material through to rock and concert bands. People have taken part in yoga, zumba and jogging.
Others have partaken of story time, knitting, chess, dance and sport whilst others have simply enjoyed the beautiful gardens and tea and cake in the Victorian styled café.
Plans are afoot for next year and with this in mind the organisers are staging an Open Meeting at Commonweal School on Tuesday 22 October from 7-8pm.
“The Open Evening is for the general public and those who have performed or delivered workshops to come and feedback on what went well, what didn’t work so well, how can we improve next year and what else would people like to see in the park next year.
This festival is very much about the people of Swindon organising their own events under the Little Big Festival banner. We can help promote your event, but it is very much about people taking ownership and building communities,” said Josie Williams, Community Arts Development Officer at Commonweal.
Carol Watts, who runs the Old Town Gardens Café, is a key partner and besides plying the community with her fabulous cakes has been a godsend in being the point of contact for many of the events.
“It is very much weather orientated, but even so people have come out to take part or watch. There has been a tremendous atmosphere and people really love the Town Gardens, it’s a central meeting place to relax and unwind,” she said.
Martin Hambidge, from Swindon Borough Council Parks Department is pleased with the events. “It is lovely to see the park being used and for people to spend time relaxing with their family and friends. The feedback has been very encouraging and I look forward to next year’s events.”
There will also be an opportunity at the meeting for musicians and workshop/session deliverers to earmark a date in next year’s calendar of events.
If you would like to come to the meeting please email firstname.lastname@example.org or tel Josie on 01793 427860 as Carol will be serving free tea and homemade cakes!
