On Saturday June 25, Swindon town centre will come to life celebrating the work and commitment of our Armed Forces.
This will be the third year inSwindon BID Company Ltd, the Business Improvement District (BID) Company for the town centre will be running the event. It is an opportunity to recognise the work the combined services have done for our country.
The event will commence with a military parade through the town centre, leaving The Parade, outside Debenhams and arriving at Wharf Green, under the Big Screen at 11.30am. A military service will take place before the Mayor of Swindon and the Vice Lord Lieutenant, Colonel James Arkell, TD, DL, will award veterans the prestigious lapel badge at a special ceremony.
Charlie Schneider, a recipient of the Veteran’s Badge in 2010, is in full support of this campaign and encourages anyone who is eligible to apply. “It’s a simple process to fill out the form and the ceremony on the day is an excellent opportunity to invite friends and family to celebrate the occasion.” Charlie is now Operations Manager for AM Medical Services and is an excellent example of how people develop their skills in the forces for future careers.
Following the badge ceremony a day full of entertainment supported by the forces will be available for all the family. Details of this entertainment will be confirmed at a later date available at www.swindontowncentre.co.uk.
Former members of the Armed Forces who have fought in conflicts and peace keeping missions since World War Two are entitled to the unique badge honouring military men and women.
Those who have served in various capacities in the Army, RAF and Royal Navy during times of non-conflict – along with members of the reserves and volunteers – are also eligible for the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge.
If you feel you are eligible to apply for the veteran’s badge that are various ways this can be done. These include:
*Download the registration form on the town centre website www.swindontowncentre.co.uk and return to inSwindon
*Completing the form available at the Visitor Information Centre in Regent’s Street
Applicants should note that details will not be taken over the phone, all elements of the form have to be completed accurately, failure to do so may lead to refusal by the Ministry of Defence, and people cannot apply for a Veteran’s Badge if they have already received one.
Deadline for registration forms is Friday 27 May, any forms returned after this date may be declined.
