Ex-Greendown School pupil Amy Phillippo, 30, from Abbey Meads, a communication specialist with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, is currently in Sierra Leone.
She was promoted to Sergeant in October and posted for a year to the International Military Assistance Training Team (Sierra Leone) where she manages the communications systems.
She said: “With national elections taking place in November, we’re all very busy ensuring communications networks are running in the background without any problems.”
When not in her workshop and dealing with problems, Amy has been involved with the National Youth Award Scheme (NYAS), the Sierra Leone equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
She said: “So far I have helped at a few presentations trying to increase involvement in the NYAS and am presently trying to coordinate a project amongst other service personnel to help in the construction of a school made out of plastic bottles close to our base.”
