Ben Loughrey, from Highworth, played in the North of England Youths (U-23) Championships held at Middlesbrough GC Yorkshire in August. He qualified after 36 holes with scores of 72 and 66 to be in 4th place 3 shots behind the leader. Over the final 36 holes Ben carded rounds of 68 and 69 to win by 1 shot on 5 under par for the 72 holes.
This was Ben's first major win, playing off +2, on the amateur circuit, pitting himself against the best amateur golfers in the country and he is hoping this win will get him a selection into an England squad in 2010.
Ben has been a member of Wrag Barn GC since the age of 7 and has represented his club and county. We congratulate Ben on his win – may there be many more – and we wish him all the success in the future.
See some of the cream of English Amateur golf at the English Golf Union County Finals being played at Chipping Sodbury GC on 25, 26 and 27 September. Ben will be in the Wiltshire team as they battle 3 other counties over 3 days in foursomes and singles matchplay for the title of English County Champions. Entry is FREE & Wiltshire are looking for success as the county has never won this title.
