Daredevils in search of a new sport to test their nerves as well as their fitness can sign up to Wiltshire Roller Derby.
Club vice chair Michelle McKenny, 33 – better known to fans as Shell Shock, said: “Roller derby is a really fun activity, it becomes your life. You always want to practise and because the club doesn’t have a sponsor it’s also very sociable as we’re always organising fundraisers.”
Before members are allowed to play a competitive game, or ‘bout’, they must pass a series of challenges during a 20 week minimum skills test.
Sessions for new skaters – known as Freshmeat – are held on Thursdays, 7pm to 8.30pm, at Isambard Community School in North Swindon.
Katie Prince, 31, who has been playing for 18 months, said: “It’s awesome. I had no idea what I was doing when I first started roller derby, but it’s addictive once you start improving.”
Ladies who fancy joining the club in 2014 are being encouraged to join up. If enough men show interest, sessions can be organised for them.
