Interest in Swindon’s new sport and outdoor activity shop The Big Adventure
Store has confirmed the move by Chris Pegler, Justin Woodward and Jason
Pinkney to offer a place where higher level athletes can access the best
quality equipment – with advice to go with it.
And you don’t have to be at the top of the game. Lots of people who read the
article about the store in the July SwindonLink magazine have made the trip to buy footwear and cycles unavailable elsewhere in the town. “There was a tremendous reaction,” said Chris. “People want to spend time selecting what’s best for them and know they are buying quality, and getting good unbiased advice in doing so.”
Hundreds of sportsmen and women attended the Big Adventure open day at Basepoint in West Swindon, on 11 August, travelling from all over the region and from as far afield as Devon and Liverpool.
When Chris Pegler, Justin Woodward and Jason Pinkney started the Big Adventure after working for big companies offering outdoor and sporting equipment, where the pressure was to shift product at the expense of customer care.
“We all felt that customers weren’t getting the right support they needed to equip themselves for their chosen sport or activity,” said Chris. “We wanted to provide a place for Swindon sports fans to get specialist advice, equipment and a quality range of products, in a relaxed atmosphere.
“At present you have to travel to Bristol for the specialist help we now give.”
The Big Adventure Store offers a made-to-measure bike build service as well as a gait analysis machine, where the customer’s running style is analysed on a treadmill to ensure they can be fitted with the best shoe for their needs.
“We’re not trying to force customer sales,” said Justin. “Our aim is to ensure our customers will have a more enjoyable and safe experience doing their favourite sport.”
