This year’s Span competition was held at the Radley College in Abingdon, where 4 counties completed against each other. Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire.
There were three categories in total, all with the same theme ("Come Dancing"), 1st year apprentice, 2nd year apprentice and advanced apprentice. All three competitions run at the same time in an amazing venue chosen by Alice North of Span Training and Development. Swindon won 99% of the top three places in each category. Swindon is showing great talent, these apprentices are our tomorrow.
The competition had 90 contestants taking part overall, 30 in each category where only 3 people would win either first, second or third place, 5 salons from Swindon won a place in the competition.
The judges said "the standard was the highest they have seen, and it is getting stronger every year".
Caroline Collis of Caroline Collis Hairdressing & Beauty says It takes a lot of work for these apprentices to enter competitions, with every day training, hard work mixed with support from your employer and family including friends as well. It can be achieved! It is a massive achievement the fact they enter the competition, let alone win!
Dan Kingsley of Caroline Collis Hairdressing and Beauty, started hairdressing not even being able to put hair into a ponytail, after one month he entered his first competition and gained many skills in how to put up long hair. It is normally impossible for anyone to enter a competition when they have had only one month of hairdressing training. Dan showed great enthusiasm as he had to work very hard as he started his NVQ 2 course 4 months after everyone else. The following year he entered the 2nd year apprentice and won, the theme was "Fairytales" and Dan did a "Unicorn"! This year the theme was "Come Dancing" and Dan entered the Advance apprentice category and won for a second year running designing a "Show girl" look on model Lucy Guinness.
Caroline believes in training all her own staff, they can learn so much from working in a salon and having once a month training on theory with the training company which is Span Training & Development Ltd of Abingdon.
