A book illustrated by Swindon artist David Bent created in association with the Red Arrows and Breitling was presented to Prince Charles when he visited the Royal International Air Tattoo on Friday 11 July to celebrate the 50th display season of the RAF aerobatics team.
His Royal Highness toured stands and displays in the exhibition area and met members of the Air Cadets, as well as students and staff of from the Cotswold School from Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury, close to this country home.
Prince Charles moved on to meet the pilots and aircrew of the RAF Red Arrows. The team had just performed their display and taken part in a special flypast, accompanied by aircraft flown by the team leaders from the Patrouille de France, Patrouille Suisse, Frecce Tricolori and Breitling Jet Team, to mark the special anniversary.
He chatted with the pilots about aerobatic performances and then climbed into an aircraft cockpit to learn more about the finer points of flying in a display.
Red Arrows leader Squadron Leader Jim Turner presented the Prince with ‘A celebration of the Red Arrows,’ a beautifully illustrated book of paintings and photo constructs created by David Bent from Old Town, Swindon.
He has worked with the Red Arrows over seven years to record and paint them in different and imaginative ways.
The special edition has been published with the help of Breitling which has also made a limited edition Transocean Chronograph watch featuring an engraved insignia of the Red Arrow’s 50th anniversary tail fin. David and his wife Carole attended a special launch of the book at the Breitling showroom with the Red Arrows pilots in early June.
The cover features David’s striking painting Timeless on its cover, held by David, left.
Each of the 50 Breitling timepieces is accompanied by ‘A celebration of the Red Arrows.’
Sadly David is unwell and, after a spell in hospital, has been able to attend the Air Tattoo dedicated to the Red Arrows.
Carole said: "Dave is delighted to be one of the people that the Reds chose to be a part of their celebrations marking their fifty display seasons.
"It is lovely to know that Dave’s book is now in Royal possession."
