There were worries at about 11.30am on Monday 29 July that the town was in for another deluge to rival 2007 when roads were blocked and hundreds of houses flooded.
Typhoon like rain slashed down on and off for about an hour but then eased off and blew away eastwards.
Even so the Great Western Way under the Bruce Street Bridges became an instant lake, as it does whenever there is a sudden heavy downpour – as pictured by Richard Wintle of Calyx.
Some drivers happily ploughed into the water thinking if they drove fast enough the waves would part for them and not cause any problems. The water drained away nearly as quickly as it arrived.
