Austerity pressure group Swindon People’s Assembly (SPA) will be out and about talking to Swindon residents about Chancellor George Osborne’s 2014 Budget in the Centre of Swindon at the Fountain from 4.30pm on Wednesday 19 March.
The SPA will have its own red Budget Box and will be inviting Swindonians to send their own (polite) requests to George Osborne.
It comes after the SPA’s successful protests about the government’s use of controversial IT contractor to assess work related sickness benefits
Kate Linnegar of the SPA and a self employed businesswoman said , “Ordinary people have had 4 years of falling living standards, job cuts and declining public services. We would like an end to George Osborne’s Eton Mess.”
“Our priorities would be to spend public funds wisely on measures to help hard working families and the vulnerable in society”
“We would implement measures such as raising the National Insurance threshold for those on low income and introduce a proper living wage. This will take people out of benefits, give them increased spending power and the money will be in circulation benefitting the economy”
“Affordable housing to buy or rent is another priority – so much money is wasted paying private landlords vast amounts in housing benefit. This is costing the country millions.”
“Our measures would be paid for by reducing military spending, our country’s precious resources are being drained by fighting America’s battles.
"We would also close loopholes and tax breaks on the country’s top 5% earners and ensure that companies such as Amazon, Starbucks, Barclays and Vodafone pay the proper amount in corporation tax instead of rooting profits to offshore tax havens”
Kate finished by saying, “Everybody is welcome to join us and engage in discussing where the nation’s priorities really lie”
