A none too bright DHL truck driver thought he could get away with passing under the railway bridge on Wootton Bassett Road just before 10am on 8 December but as Richard Wintle‘s pictures show, the result has been severe disruption to traffic leaving the town towards West Swindon and the M4 motorway.
The articulated lorry was transporting a container load of sugar to the Iceland distribution centre on the other side of the bridge and the driver probably did not know Swindon’s maze of roads as he was approaching his destination from completely the wrong direction.
Despite a sign on the bridge, which carries the main railway line from London to Bristol showing the height restriction of 4.5 metres, the driver of the DHL articulated lorry seemed to think he could get his unit under it.
The emergency services have taken much of the day to untangle the wreckage. The driver was unhurt.
