A’Level students from across Swindon will be taking part in a special summer school at Great Western Hospital this week to give them an insight into a career in medicine.
In its second year, the ‘Dare to Doctor’ summer school will see 30 students in their first year of A’Levels spending time shadowing doctors and junior consultants on wards, practicing interviews for medical school, and learning about basic clinical skills
The students will be coming from a number of schools and colleges in the area including New College, The Ridgeway School and St Joseph’s Catholic College.
Dr Vicky Taylor, Clinical Teaching Fellow at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We started the ‘Dare to Doctor’ summer school at GWH last year and it received great feedback which is why we were keen to bring it back again this summer. Earlier this year we did a number of roadshows going out to schools and colleges and talking to the students about what the course involves; the response was great.
The course runs over three days and we wanted to make it as comprehensive as possible, but also fun. Students will be able to spend time in a clinical setting shadowing consultants and our junior doctors and they will also be introduced to basic clinical skills such as taking someone’s blood pressure and basic life support.”
The students will also hear about life at medical school, and carry out interview workshops with guidance and advice on the application process.
Vicky continues: “It will be really useful for the students to practice their interview skills and get tips from current medical students. We will also be running mock-interviews so they can put what they’ve learnt into practice.
The Undergraduate Team at GWH have worked very hard to put on this event, and the support from our junior doctors and medical students has also been fantastic. It is a great opportunity for them to share their career experiences with the college students. Many will be giving talks during the course on topics such as medical mysteries and diagnostic skills, and working in medicine outside of a hospital setting.”
The ‘Dare to Doctor’ summer school will be taking place from Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 July.
