Consultation on the highly anticipated plans for the multi-million pound regeneration of a key site within Swindon town centre is continuing via the internet after a public presentation in the first week of March.
A central priority for the future development of Swindon, Muse Developments has set out comprehensive and visionary regeneration proposals of a site lying between the railway station and The Parade shopping area called Union Square.
The project team for Union Square, led by Muse, was appointed in 2008 following an extensive competition to masterplan the site, which is in the sole ownership of the public sector. Forward Swindon, which is responsible for delivering economic growth in the borough, is coordinating the role of the public sector in the scheme.
The mixed-use masterplan will include exceptional public spaces; a large garden square (Union Square); 650,000 square feet of high quality office buildings; 450 new homes; 150,000 of retail space, restaurants and leisure facilities including the possibility of a hotel, and a relocated bus station.
Doug Finlay, for Muse Developments, explained that “Union Square has regeneration at its heart and will provide a vibrant and genuine extension to the town centre. It will give the people of Swindon a new area to meet, shop, work and live – a place that people want to part of.”
Ian Piper, Chief Executive of Forward Swindon, noted that “Union Square will offer a central location in the heart of the town for new offices and homes. It will underpin investor confidence in Swindon town centre.”
