Stepping Forward, a new project funded by the Heritage Lottery aims to trace Swindon’s strong tradition of community involvement – and there are two exhibitions and coffee mornings where people can discuss how their areas have evolved.
These take place at:
• West Swindon Library: Friday 1 March to Friday 15 March, with a coffee morning discussion on 15 March, 11am to 1pm;
• North Swindon Library: Friday 15 March to Thursday 28 March, with a coffee morning on 28 March, 11am to 1pm.
Martha Parry keen to share your memories
Swindon-based historian and social researcher Martha Parry is keen to meet people with memories and photos to share in an online archive and in a book to be published.
She said: “Everybody talks about how we have a great tradition of community action here, so we wanted to prove it. There’s a great deal written about the social history of Swindon, but little about its grassroots community action.
“Our town has a very long and proud record of people ‘doing things for themselves,’ since the rapid increase in population from the 1840s. With the cutbacks going on perhaps Swindon people have to reconsider what it takes to build a community.”
Meet Martha at the coffee mornings listed above or mail her: firstname.lastname@example.org or contact Shaz Qaddus at Voluntary Action Swindon on 01793 538398.
