The owners of an office block in the town centre have picked up an idea devised by Swindon Link to brighten up the town and have now launched a competition to discover an inspirational design to create a large landmark piece of art.
Lenta Business Centres, owners of Alexander House in Fleming Way, is funding the competition and the technical side of the project, turning creative inspiration into reality, is being supported by town centre regeneration company, Forward Swindon.
Two ‘treatments’ using Photoshop were published in the July Link with more to be seen online at http://bit.ly/brightenswindon
Youngsters at Peatmoor Primary School have already come up with some colourful examples using more traditional pencils and paper.
Alexander House manager Rachel Hampson said she was taken aback when she saw the July Link, after several tenants had sent her texts about how we had provided unusual publicity. “Having been here for fifteen years I’m protective of the building, it has a good reputation, lovely tenants and owners who really care about the service we provide. But I was impressed by the quirky idea.
"Alexander House is very white and stands out in the town centre and I started wondering whether an artwork on the exterior could attract even more attention. I approached the owner and he could see the possibilities immediately.
“This project gives us a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the regeneration of Swindon. We’re really excited about seeing the ideas for Alexander House from artists, people with ideas and youngsters at college or school. We look forward to playing our part in brightening up Swindon town centre.”
Anyone can enter the competition and Lenta is offering £250 to the adult entrant whose idea is turned into a huge work of art. Designs from under 18s are also invited and the winning entry will receive £100 with runner ups receiving art materials and other goodies. Entries are also welcomed from companies and organisations.
The closing date is Tuesday 30 November. The best submissions will be announced on 6 December and a programme for installation announced in January.
