Music enthusiasts will be able to check out the talents of local young people at a live concert this Sunday, 28 March, 7pm, at the Wyvern Theatre.
Over 100 senior members of Swindon Young Musicians (SYM) will be performing are part of the Government’s ‘Tune In-Year of Music’ project which aims to celebrate the eclectic range of music opportunities available to children and young people.
Concert visitors will hear from a variety of different music groups, including a flute choir, recorder and guitar orchestras and a string ensemble. The Janice Thompson Performance Trust – a Swindon-based educational charity – has also been invited to the concert to sing a few numbers.
SYM is part of the Swindon Music Service, which is run by Swindon Borough Council. SYM provides instruments to anyone aged between 3 and 23 and organises workshops, concerts and music festivals. Currently, there are 4,624 local children and young people who are involved with the music service through SYM or other initiatives in or outside of school.
Councillor Garry Perkins, Cabinet Member for Children Services, said, “This concert promises to be a wonderful occasion that celebrates the musical talents of our young people here in Swindon. In future I hope to see more children and young people get involved in projects like this as it can have a positive impact on their educational development and give them more confidence.”
