A film entitled ‘Rachel’s Nightmare’ made by Create Studios’ MassMedia group was nominated for best film in the All Shorts Secondary category at the prestigious National Youth Film Festival Awards.
The group all attended a star-studded awards ceremony at the Vue Cinema, Leicester Square, London on Friday 8 November, and although they did not come away with an award on the evening were very proud to have been nominated.
MassMedia is a group of young people who meet fortnightly at Create Studios after school or college, and work on media projects, supported by industry professionals.
The young people led the project with their script, technical and production ideas and were supported by Film Director, Gurchetan Singh and Sound Artist, Sherylee Houssein amongst several other media professionals.
Rachel’s Nightmare beat more than a hundred other films from around the country to secure the nomination for this national award.
Create Studios ran this project with funding from First Light Movies, which promotes the development of new talent in the film industry.
Rachel’s Nightmare follows the turbulent life of Rachel as she endures a life of abuse and misfortune. When Rachel becomes a mother herself will she have the strength to defeat the darkness that hides in the shadows or will she repeat the cycle.
Shahina Johnson, Manager of Create Studios says; “We are really proud of what our next generation of film makers has achieved. We have previously won 3 First Light awards so we are hoping for another success this week.”
Gurchetan Singh says; “It is always great to see talent flourish at such a young age, from concept to post production the young people made the creative decisions needed to get the film made and now to have all that hard work recognised is fantastic, as it will give them the confidence to be more ambitious in their future filmmaking careers.”
Harvey, MassMedia Member says; “For me this project was a great opportunity to work with professionals and get a good idea of how the filming process works. I have a lot to thank MassMedia for as they have introduced me to the film industry and other enthusiastic film makers.”
The First Light Movie Awards is a prestigious event held each year in London featuring various celebrities. The films were shortlisted by an industry panel and judges including Toby Jones, Damien Jones, Mel Giedroyc, Jason Solomons, Danny Leigh, Dan Zeff and many more. The young people enjoyed going along to Leicester Square to meet the celebs along with Gurch and Sherylee from Create Studios and travelled up on the train with two MassMedia members even hot-footing it up to London after their Math’s exam!
This project has been supported by the Lottery through the BFI’s First Light initiative.
