What have a TV licence, school uniforms and Christmas presents got in common?
They are all items that Carol Ford, pictured right with daughter Carmela & granddaughter Taiya, has paid for with the help of her local credit union over the last 20 years.
Carol, mother of seven and grandmother of nine, remembers joining Clivey Credit Union when her daughter was a baby – and she’s now a mother herself. “My most recent loan was to pay for our TV licence. Now I’ve paid that off and saved up a bit more, I’m applying for a loan so I can go out and buy Christmas presents for the family without worrying.”
The volunteers at the credit union know that the cost of Christmas can take people by surprise no matter how hard they try to prepare. And what might seem like a small loan to some people makes the world of difference to others.
“The best thing about the credit union is that they’re a friendly lot of people,” said Carol. “We work out together how much I can afford to pay back each week, and that way the cost is spread out.”
Clivey Credit Union expects to see more people then ever saving for Christmas this year. Anyone living or working in Swindon can join.
