The young people of Crowdys Hill School have won a top O2 It’s Your Community Award, which means they can now buy essential equipment for their woodland management work.
Crowdys Hill School is one of several Swindon special schools working with Moving Forward Together which provide opportunities for young people to improve their personal, social and independent living skills through practical community activities. Their award will enable them to extend this successful programme by buying essential equipment.

This national community programme funded by O2 enables people to make a difference in their local community. Mark Ferguson, Branch Manager for O2’s Swindon store, got a taste of just some of the activities that the students are involved in last Friday 29 February. Mark was introduced to a working team and shown around the site at Crowdys Hill School’s forest school to see the impact It’s Your Community Award will have on its farm and bicycle work shop.

Moving Forward Together actively improves and engages the personal, social and academic skills of young people with complex learning difficulties. All academic focus is shifted to the outdoors with an environmental education programme of woodland management, which include practical skills and crafts as well as drama and the performing arts.
Working in partnership with the National Trust’s Buscot and Coleshill Estates the project is helping its students have a greater awareness of the issues facing the Trust. A combination of land management and creative, fun exercises has brought a deeper sense of connection and appreciation to the natural landscape, inspiring the participants to become stewards and guardians of their environment.
We have seen a real difference in the hopes and aspirations of our students. Doug Staff one of the teachers said The success of Moving Forward Together is due to the support of its partners in creating such a stimulating programme. We have raised the expectations of the students and disappointment is not on the agenda. It is fantastic to get this support from It’s Your Community as so many people will benefit from it.
