East West Caterers & Events is a brand new business set up by Shaw-based Ursula Nulliah, originally from South Africa, who is bringing the flavours of her childhood to the Swindon palate.
“I was 10 years old when I realized how much I enjoyed cooking,” she said. “As I stirred my first curry I recall the excitement I felt at having created a meal. But catering was never a career possibility. Cooking for me was a loving gesture that strengthened the bond amongst family.”
Ursula, pictured, developed a career in fashion design, until her husband was given an opportunity to work in the UK which opened up possibilities for her. “Suddenly I found myself in an entirely new environment where fashion was no longer the only thing I could do. I felt my first step toward fulfilling a long lived passion to cook for a living, while listening to the music of Andrea Bocelli.”
Ursula’s menu consists of mainly Indian cuisine, with influence from her homeland. “I think my food is a healthy alternative to the usual curries that are prepared in Britain. I don’t use a lot of cream or coconut milk and all the spices I use are freshly ground to give a unique taste. Whilst the dishes may have similar names that are used here, it has a distinctly Southern African flavour; several are secret recipes handed down from my grandmother.”
Ursula can accommodate parties of up to 100 people, and provides for the needs of vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. She also offers a non-spicy option for children’s parties.
