Nortth Swindon resident Mark Tredgett has become so fed up with litter strewn areas around where he lives that he’s set up a volunteer litter picking service to clean up – and he wants others to join him on the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Big Tidy Up’ on Saturday 3 March.
Mark has been patrolling from Tadpole Lane to the A419 junction by Abbey Stadium, as well the streets of St Andrew’s Ridge. This year he has collected 11 bags full of MacDonalds wrappings, cups, trays to vodka bottles and tin cans, and bags of dog poo hung by owners who add their weird decoration to bushes next to footpaths.
Mark said: "Perhaps I’m overly concerned and should just let nature advance and grow to hide the litter. But It seems the growing litter in the area is another aspect for others nationally to maintain a low opinion of Swindon. It will be justified if we sit back and continue to treat Swindon as Wiltshire’s dustbin."
On 3 March Mark is asking like minded volunteers to join him at 8am at the entrance to Lyall Close, off Tadpole Lane, Swindon SN25 2EJ.
Depending on how many turn up, the aim is to remove litter for an hour in the direction of Abbey Stadium. The activity is registered at http://www.thebigtidyup.org/tidyups_group.aspx?id=15906
