A serious road traffic collision involving two cars on Drakes Way this afternoon closed one section of the carriageway while traffic cops investigated the scene.
At around 2.45pm on Tuesday 16 July, emergency services from Wiltshire Police, South Western Ambulance Service, Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene in order to extricate the driver trapped in a severely damaged blue Vauxhall Nova. Great Western Air Ambulance was also called in.
The collision which also involved a BMW X5 took place on the t-junction on Penny Lane, next to The Car Shop, near Greenbridge Retail Park. There was traffic chaos throughout East Swindon and the town centre. Police appealed to drivers to avoid the area.
The Air Ambulance helicopter landed on the car park of the Drakes Way Business Centre and attracted the attention of nearby families who stood in front and took photos while paramedics were at the scene.
A police officer on scene said the driver extracted from the Nova had received ‘serious head injuries’. He is believed to be a man in his 20s, and was being assessed by paramedics as to whether he should be flown to Bristol Royal Infirmary.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Great Western Hospital.
There was traffic disruption throughout the area well into the evening.
