We are a fashionable Bridal Boutique and Prom Dress Outlet, and over the last 25 years we have focused on delivering great sales products and services to our clients in Swindon.
Our work brings us into contact with adolescent girls of school leaving age who are looking forward to their big Prom night and a bright future. Sadly many children, even in this country, are faced with a bleaker future. This year, we want to support the RED NOSE DAY EFFORT, especially during this economic downturn where we know everyone is suffering one way or another.
WHAT MOTIVATED US TO GET INVOLVED THIS YEAR?
Well here is the story:
A few weeks ago a young girl came in the shop with her mum. As they came in, the mum discreetly said: ‘I know it sound bad, but we only have a £50 budget for a Prom dress, please can you help us?’ Our staff wanting to help looked through the rails and found a few dresses that we could let go for £50. We understood the desire of that 16 year old to look as stunning as her friends. She liked a beautiful pink bodice dress with beading on the bodice and a taffeta meringue skirt (originally retailing for £299). We agreed for her to try it on. One of our consultant ladies went in with her in the changing room and helped her to put the dress on. As suspected, the dress was just a bit too tight. The young girl pleaded: ‘Please Miss make it fit. My mum doesn’t have any money, please I don’t care if I can’t breathe, please make it fit.’
We then called in one of our designers to see what could be done to make this dress look as if it had been made specially for her. The designer suggested a few modifications and we agreed to go ahead with it. (Like in any other boutique, the alterations are charged in addition to the initial cost of the dress – by alteration we mean, hems, sides, boning, padding, etc. In this industry, the dress is only a template to be tailored to the exact shape of the client.) After calculating the total additional cost, the designer agreed to do the work for £45. We threw in an additional discount and a free bag. We don’t want to name them, but this girl and her mum were so distressed that it truly touched us. (Our consultant girls were so happy we could help them that they couldn’t stop talking about this and named that particular client as the best sale of the week.)
We want to say that this girl and her mum did not beg: they kept their dignity and were made to feel that they were as valuable to us as any other highflying client. They were not scramblers but genuine individuals who had been hit by economic hardship. We did not ask them details about their situation, we just helped the best we could. We do not feel that we are better than the rest but grateful that they took a gamble and asked us.
Every day we have beautiful, fortunate girls that come in and still have the possibility to buy what they want. As a business we do realise that things are not easy for everyone but to be faced with hard core reality gave us food for thought.
