December sees the launch of the former bingo hall on Regent Circus as MECA – Music Entertainment Cultural Arena – with gold selling, killer festival performers Example on stage on 27 December.
MECA will also host four events in December aimed at showcasing the type of venue it aims to be.
“MECA has huge scope for staging a myriad of events,” said Steve Causer of GVS who are setting up the new venture. “Swindon wants a live music venue, but MECA is going to be so much more. In December we test the venue with a number of shows like a boxing Christmas event and a DJ night to bring in a wide range of people.”
Example prices start at £12.50 plus booking fee. Tickets for all events are available from www.swindontickets.co.uk and via Swin City Comics on Morley Street.
• The former bingo hall opened as The Regent Cinema in 1929 with 1,322 seats and an area at the back of the auditorium where patrons could stand while waiting for seats to become free at the end of the rolling programmes. It was the first cinema built with the talkies in mind, although it also had a separate programme ‘for those who favour the silent film.’ It became a bingo hall in 1974.
