Swindon’s ‘Post Modern Gallery’, the converted old post office in Theatre Square, will be hosting an exhibition of the work of local artist, Toby Robson from Tuesday, February 1 to Friday February 18 2011
Toby, who lives in Old Town, specialises in metal casting in aluminium and iron and has a small workshop and foundry at his parents near Devizes. "This exhibition has given me a real impetus to gather a large collection of work together in one place. Finalising the date also gave me an injection of adrenalin to finish off several pieces I’ve been tinkering with for far too long!
"Artsite, who run the Post Modern are a fantastic group of people – and to the council’s credit for making the old post office available – Swindon really does have a burgeoning grass-roots arts scene. It’s a common cry amongst the town’s creatives that there’s little of cultural interest happening in the town, well, here’s an example of how voluntary groups and the council can work together to change that. There’s so much going on through Artsite, people really ought to come along to check the place out and get involved.
"The exhibition itself is a follow on to some work I exhibited at Belgravia Lettings last year. Some of it reflects my experiences over a very difficult couple of years, others reflect my interest in organic forms, and throughout I’ve played with different casting techniques to create a range of effects and finishes. The name ‘FeAl’ is both a pun on the way I create and of the chemical symbols for the two main materials I work in.
"I have been extremely lucky as someone falling into the art world at the end of my 30s to have had the support and encouragement of some of the country’s best cast iron sculptors, both from The Museum of Steel Sculpture up in Coalbrookdale and closer to home, The Bullpen foundry over at Stanford in the Vale. If the exhibition proves to be a success, I’ll be off to the USA this summer, where I’ve had a chance in a lifetime offer to cast and install a large scale iron sculpture at the internationally famous Sculpture Trails outdoor museum in Solsbury, Indiana.
The Post Modern Gallery will be open from 11.00 to 4.00pm weekdays and Saturdays (private views can be arranged outside these hours by appointment). For more information, please visit the Artsite website at www.artsite.ltd.uk or visit Toby’s blog and website at http://www.blackandwhitecasting.co.uk/
