The Mayor of Swindon Steve Wakefield is making an appeal for football kit to help service personnel build closer community links in Afghanistan.
“Many people will be sending out comfort boxes for our troops this Christmas, but I thought the people of Swindon could assist the peace making process through the common interest of football,” said Coun Wakefield. “Afghanistan is a very poor country and anything we can do for the people, especially the children, would be welcomed.”
“Mike Neville, station commander at RAF Lyneham, has told me this would be a very appropriate appeal and a suitable gift for Afghan children as the RAF are doing lots of community work to boost good relations around the airbase at Kandahar.”
Can you help?
The mayor wants kit of all sizes and colours – children, youth, adults – but especially shirts. They must be freshly washed without tears or holes. Boots and balls must be clean of mud.
Company donations would be welcome.
To help, call the Mayor’s secretary on 463599 or mail: email@example.com
Mayor Steve said, “my aim is to completely fill the mayoral limo with kit and make several trips to Lyneham by 5 December. So come on let’s all fill the Mayor’s boot.”
