The Rock Café at St John’s church in Haydon Wick celebrates its first anniversary this month, and has become a popular venue over the past year for a cup of tea and a bite to eat – including their rock cake signature treat.
Café volunteer Anna Richardson said, “having the café has really added to the community of St John’s Church as people from our different congregations have got to know one another. But we’re not here to evangelise – we give a warm welcome to everyone from the local community.”
The name of the café has religious connotations, but it actually arose as an acronym of the ‘Refurbishment Of the Church Kitchen’ project.
Gwen Packer of Greenmeadow visits the café every week with her daughter-in-law Madeleine. “It’s a nice little stop off after a trip to Morrisons; the cakes always go down well,” said Gwen.
The café is run on a not-for- profit basis by a committee and a 50 strong bank of volunteers. “The café was the brainchild of the chair of our committee Pauline Davis,” said Anna. “It’s great to share our building with the community around us.”
