Martin James – countryman, naturalist, international salt and freshwater angler, author, consultant, television presenter, broadcaster and writer – will be opening Tackle Discounts in Swindon.
He will fly in from his saltwater fly fishing school in Fujairah on the Indian Ocean in the UAE, to cut the ribbon at the shop's official opening at 11am on Saturday 5 December.
Andrew Train, son of David Train, the famous inventor of the UK's best selling fishing fly, the "Cats Whisker", started Tackle Discounts, whose head office is in Swindon, Wiltshire, by trading on eBay almost 5 years ago.
Selling mainly fly fishing products under the "Flextec" name he quickly found that there was a huge market for "fishing bargains" as fisherman began using the internet more and more . On the back of that, huge growth ensued, to the point that Tackle Discounts is now eBay's largest retailer of fishing tackle in the UK, twice as big as the 2nd place company.
Now, 5 years on, they look set to do the same thing with general course and carp tackle under their own brands "Cyprinus" and "Sumo" and Andrew thinks this will be a very good year for the company despite all of this recession talk.
They have Philip Chun, former owner of a large fishing bait company, on board who is working on developing products for the 'Cyprinus' range and will always be on hand at the shop should anyone require advice. "If an angler can get himself top quality products, equal to that of products costing sometimes twice as much as other manufacturers' then that's surely better for everyone?"
Well, that's the dream and hopefully in another 5 years we will have made fishing more affordable and less about showing off to your mates. Tackle Discounts first retail store is set to open on 5 December, so please pop in for some bargains and representatives from other big tackle names such as Nash, Korda and Trakker.
