Over the past three years Swindon-based Network Rail manager Ashley Clack has attracted 25,000 registered users of his Facebook page to advertise items for sale, free or wanted, but in mid-November he’ll be launching a new website to appeal to a wider user base, particularly people who don’t use social media.
Explaining how the idea started Ashley said: “When I moved house a few years ago I had a few furniture items and a child’s buggy to get rid of. I didn’t want to send them to the tip, but there wasn’t enough to do a car boot sale either, so I posted pictures of the items on Facebook and within seconds had found buyers.”
Now Facebook is proving too inflexible and not so user-friendly for the purpose, so Ashley reckons the time is right to migrate to a dedicated website. He added: “When the site launches it will be free to list your items, and to quote your price or nearest offer. There’s no formal bidding, though often people do bid if they want the item enough.”
www.forsalefreeorwantedinswindon.co.uk launches on Sunday 18 November.
