Museums at Night – Magic Lantern Show
Museums at Night is a nationwide event over the weekend of 13 – 15 May 2011, which will involve over 180 museums. Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will be participating with a Magic Lantern Show.
Patrick Furley will be talking about entertainment from before the days of cinema and television. It begins with showing many different magic lanterns, some powered by candles, lime light, carbide, carbon ore and paraffin. A real magic lantern will then be used for the show, an electric model from the 1930s. The show will start with original glass hand painted plates, some adverts, local scenes, humorous plates, a ghost: many of the plates are coloured and the show will incorporate the first moving pictures on glass.
N.B. The Magic Lantern show is a Swindon Museum & Art Gallery event.

The History of the Wilts and Berks Canal in the Swindon area
Friends of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery will start their Talks Series for 2011 with a talk on The History of the Wilts and Berks Canal in the Swindon area by Roy Cartwright. The talk will last for an hour and will look at the route the canal took through Swindon as it was then and how that fits with the way it is now and is illustrated by a 20 minute DVD. The talk ties in with two 19th Century maps on display in the Museum’s Maps exhibition, which show the planning surrounding the route the canal followed.
Any profits go towards the Friends Purchase Fund, which is set up to pay for objects which will keep on improving the Museum. The most recent Purchase Fund project involved paying for a professional photographer to produce a record of the Swindon Art Gallery’s Ceramics Collection, which will be a continuing asset both for education, general reference, the internet extension of museum collections and the production of catalogues for exhibitions.
