Local comedian and comedy coach Sarah Archer has just performed at the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival with her first solo show ‘Bumfluff and Brimstone’ described as ‘a hilarious rollercoaster ride to discover who and why she is.’
A former Human Resources Director, Sarah was bitten by the comedy bug and remembers her first ever five minute guest spot at a comedy club. “I never felt more confident, exhilarated, funny and happy,” said Sarah. “And after doing comedy as a hobby I realised I loved the buzz of performing and making people laugh so much that I wanted to do it full time. I gave up my well paid and "secure" job, and pursued my dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian.”
Titter is Sarah’s seven week course in which she now helps others to gain enough confidence to do their own five minute comedy routine. Anyone can achieve this, Sarah believes. “If you have ever felt like you aren’t funny, you’re being left behind or you find yourself quite anxious at times in life, then Titter could be just what you are looking for.”
Tim Sanders, CEO of Yahoo says, ‘Being likeable, funny and confident will allow you to win more times in life than you lose.’” Sarah continues, “and comedy can be a great asset in business. There are plenty of examples of this. Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama and William Hague have all used humour to help them in their careers, to motivate others and to relieve what could otherwise be a tense situation. Leaders and business people can benefit hugely if they can create rapport, and a great way to do this is to laugh together.”
Comedy, she says, also boosts creativity and productivity by encouraging people to think about things from a different perspective.
“We often think that the way we are is a reflection of our personality, and that is that,” Sarah explains, “for example, some people see themselves as shy. But confidence is a skill that can be learned, and learning to share a laugh can help you squeeze the best out of your life and your business.”
