It’s said that the average person consumes 3,500 calories on Christmas day alone. Add in all the mince pies, chocolates, booze and other treats over the rest of the festive season and it’s no wonder the pounds pile on.
Now a new web site created by the Ramblers’ Association in partnership with Swindon Council, Challenge Swindon and NHS Swindon, gives you an easy way of making walking interesting – by discovering the huge number of routes in and around the town, or by joining a walking group.
“Walking is an ideal natural exercise, it’s an easy way to manage your weight,” says Swindon Council’s walks coordinator Amanda Rothwell. “If you walk for a mile, about 20 minutes at a moderate pace, you can burn around 100 calories. You don’t need specialist skills or equipment, it’s a great way to lift your mood during these gloomy winter months, and there are some lovely places to walk locally.
“Why not join a walking group to help motivate you? There are lots of different ones to choose from, depending on your free time and fitness levels.”
Explore www.getwalking.org/swindon with over 20 routes, photos, descriptions and distances which can be downloaded.
