Just a few weeks to go to the Mad March Hare and three generations from one Swindon family will be heading together to the starting line, bedecked in bunny ears and t-shirts.
Babs Suggs from Eldene, her daughter and granddaughter, Sian and Tegan Fletcher, will be walking the 5k route one week before Mothers’ Day.
This is the third year that Babs has taken part and the second for Sian and Tegan.
“We are a family who love to do sports,” says Babs, 75, who won bronze and silver medals for sprinting at county level in Nottingham as a schoolgirl and later when in the RAF.
Sian, a nurse at the Great Western Hospital, plays and teaches hockey and has several half marathons under her belt. Tegan, 11, plays hockey as well and does martial arts classes with her younger brother Ben.
Babs enjoys Nordic walking and took her sticks to walk the 5k route the first time. Since then, it has become an annual mother, daughter and granddaughter event and they walk it together.
She said: “I don’t run anymore but I do walk at a good, brisk pace. I think I will aim for the 10k route next year.”
The 7th Mad March Hare, Sunday 23 March, starting and finishing at Lydiard Park Academy.
The 5km or 10km routes takes walkers, joggers and runners on a circular route of West Swindon and Lydiard Park.
