A major blot on the town’s skyline is being erased as demolition of the two main blocks of the former Swindon College on Regent Circus starts.
The site is being redeveloped by Ashfield Land, who acquired the land in 2006 after the college moved to its complex at North Star. The £50 million development will contain a six screen cinema, eight restaurants and a supermarket.
The 60’s building has been regarded as an eyesore in the town centre for many years, even when in use for education, and its demolition will be welcomed as a step in the regeneration of the central area of Swindon.
The £500 million worth of re-development projects are a welcome boost to the construction sector which is the worst hit part of the UK economy presently suffering the impact of a double-dip recession.
