A group of Swindon College Hairdressing students presented a cheque to the Prospect Hospice for £273.49. The Level 3 hairdressing students raised the amount by organising a ‘blow-dry’ marathon at the College as well collecting sponsorship money from family and friends to take part in the event.
For eleven hours, the students carried out hairdressing appointments and managed to complete a marathon of cutting, blow drying, straightening and even shaving ‘heads’ for clients in the Inspirations Hair Salon at the College. Staff and students at the College also attended the event to donate money to the worthwhile cause.
Linda Powell, Hairdressing Lecturer said:
“The students did an amazing job raising money for the Prospect Hospice. It was the students’ idea to organise a fund raising event for a local charity and they all wanted to raise money for the Prospect as some of them have had a connection with the Prospect Hospice, where either a friend or relative with a terminal illness has been looked after by the staff at the Hospice. I’m so proud of them, they did a fantastic job.”
Hairdressing student, Ebony Williams, aged 18, said:
“The blow-dry marathon was a fun day and it was a good way to make a contribution for the Prospect Hospice. I raised just over £30 and on the day I walked around the college campus asking students and teachers for donations.”
The College invited Sheryl Couch, Head of Fundraising from the Prospect Hospice, in so that the students could present the cheque. After the cheque was handed over, Sheryl said:
“I would like to thank all of you who took part and helped raise the money for us. We are thrilled that as students you chose Prospect Hospice as your beneficiary, it is wonderful to have your support. This money is greatly appreciated and it will help us to continue to look after and support our patients and their families.”
To run all The Prospect Hospice services, providing its much needed care to patients and their families, costs £5m each year. The hospice with the support of the community needs to raise seventy per cent of this.
