VISITORS to Lydiard Park can explore the historic estate on two wheels rather than two legs, thanks to a new bike hire service.
A new outlet in the park’s visitor centre, run in conjunction with Red Planet Bikes, is offering people the chance to hire a bike to suit all the family and provide an alternative way to enjoy the beautiful parkland and stunning Wiltshire countryside that surrounds it.
Red Planet Bikes 2 Go at Lydiard Park has bikes for adults and children of all ages. There is also a selection of trailers and tandems to try out.
The outlet, next to the café in the visitor centre, is open Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 6pm.
Councillor Keith Williams, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Corporate Services, said: “Since the £5 million restoration programme began in September 2005, Swindon Borough Council has made some major improvements to Lydiard Park, from the restoration of unique historic landscape features such as the 18th Century Walled Garden to the creation of wide, level pathways and avenues criss-crossing this 260-acre site.
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Red Planet Bikes 2 Go to offer our visitors the chance to hire a bike to explore the whole site and the public cycle routes surrounding Lydiard Park.”
Ivor Read at Red Planet Bikes said: “We’re really pleased to be able to offer a new service to the leisure and family bike rider at this new outlet in Lydiard Park.
“We will also be offering sales and repairs at Lydiard Park as well as offering cycling enthusiasts a full service from the Red Planet Bike Shop in Wood Street, Old Town.”
