Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is beginning a £50k fundraising campaign to support the development of a new Midwife-led Birth Centre at Great Western Hospital (GWH), and they want your help to name it once it is built.
Each year at the Great Western Hospital over 4,000 women give birth and, for some time, the Trust has wanted to provide mothers with more choice on where to give birth as many mothers want a less clinical environment with minimal intervention during labour.
After careful planning, the Trust is investing in a Midwife-led Birth Centre which is due to open on the second floor at GWH in February 2011. The new centre will mean mothers from across the region with uncomplicated pregnancies will be able to choose to give birth in a unit offering a less clinical, more comfortable, more homely environment in the care of dedicated and professional Midwives. Birth centres support a family-centred approach to the birth which involves parents in decision making and reduces family separation.
The Birth Centre is a significant investment for the Trust and to make it world class they are raising £50k funds to furnish the centre with all of the equipment and furniture needed to make it as comfortable as possible for mothers during labour. This is where the help and support of local businesses, community groups and individuals is needed. There are many ways you can get involved either through making a donation on behalf of your organisation or raising charitable funds on behalf of the Birth Centre.
In addition the Trust is seeking the creative input from local people to come up with a suitable name for the new centre ready for when it opens, a name which reflects what the hospital does. The winner will be invited to the grand opening of the centre and given a prize for their efforts.
Christina Rattigan, Head of Midwifery at Great Western Hospital said: “The ethos behind the new centre is to provide more choice for women and to promote birth as a normal experience for many women who have low risk pregnancies. We are very excited about the new Birth Centre being built, and we estimate that approximately 1,000 women will choose to give birth in the new centre each year.
“Over time this means many thousands of women and their new born babies will benefit from the care we will be able to provide in the centre, which is why we would like the public’s help to make donations to fund furniture and equipment and in coming up with a suitable name.”
Christina continues: “The Birth Centre will be the place where future generations will be introduced to the world and we want that environment to be the best it can be for them and their families. I am looking forward to seeing how creative people will be in coming up with a suitable name and in helping raise money for it.”
“We are asking people to consider ways they may be able to support the hospital in this appeal. Whichever way you choose, every penny will count and go towards providing a world class patient environment for mothers during labour.”
