Following a total sell-out and huge critical acclaim at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, double British Comedy Award nominee Isy Suttie brings her one-woman-musical-cyber-love-story Pearl and Dave to theatres across the UK. Well known as Dobby in Peep Show, Isy plays all the characters in this romantic tale dripping with hopes, heartbreak and emotions. We follow our two protagonists Pearl and Dave as they live out their dreams in the flighty grotto of cyber-space. Set to music, the show is interspersed with vignettes from Isy’s own love life as she mirrors her two subjects in her quest for ‘The One’.
Isy’s musical comedy has been compared to Victoria Wood and John Hegley but she very much carves her own furrow of funny, leftfield, sometimes haunting and moving songs. Her characters are finely constructed – sometimes naturalistic, sometimes fantastical – as she weaves together stand up, music and characters.
Isy is a long-time musical stand up and actress best known for playing Dobby in Channel 4’s Peep Show and Kiki in BBC2’s Whites alongside Alan Davies. She recently played an alcoholic primary school teacher in Scottish institution Rab C Nesbitt, a bossy footballer in White Van Man and a nurse in Skins, which she worked on for two series as Comedy Consultant.
Pearl and Dave is Isy’s third live solo show after sell-outs Love Lost in the British Retail Industry (2007) and The Suttie Show (2008). Last year, she completed a 45-date UK tour of Love Lost in the British Retail Industry, which was one of the two solo UK comedy shows selected for Sydney Arts Festival 2010, alongside Tim Key’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Slutcracker.
2011 saw her nominated for Breakthrough Artist at the British Comedy Awards as well as appearances on Dave’s One Night Stand along with Sarah Millican’s Support Group and Charlie Brooker’s So Wrong It’s Right (both BBC Radio 4). When Danielle Ward and Martin White’s cult hit musical Gutted was revived at the Leicester Square Theatre, Isy was psycho killer Sorrow, the female lead, alongside festival favourite Colin Hoult. She has also appeared on panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats, as many characters in children’s cartoon Octonauts and is one of the voices of monkeys, meercats and lions (she won’t do elephants) on BBC1’s wildlife sketch show Walk on the Wild Side, alongside Jason Manford and Sarah Millican.
Pearl and Dave was one of four Edinburgh shows to be selected for one-off broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 in 2012, alongside Thom Tuck, Chris Ramsey and John Peel’s Shed.
