Help mayoral couple make their golden year special.
Not only is Haydon Wick councillor Rex Barnett this year’s mayor of Swindon, he and his wife Sandra, will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in October – and they’re asking Link readers to suggest how they can make it very special for the charities they are supporting.
They are keen to visit as many Swindon organisations as possible by the middle of May next year and will be holding a number of special events to support the Willows Counselling Service, Swindon parent run Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Movement (CALM) and Prospect Hospice.
In May the mayor was reported in the Swindon Advertiser as having a target of £40,000. But coun Barnett wants to make it clear he had been misquoted. “I was asked when we took the chains of office if we had a target for the year which we didn’t. When asked if we might try for £40,000, I said that would be nice more in jest than seriousness.
“You’ve got to be careful with you media types. The role is one of being mayor first, to represent the best interests of the town, and a fundraiser second. We will be trying as hard as we can to help our chosen charities and all the others we come in contact with, but we have to be realistic about what we can achieve.”
Having been happily married since 1960, Rex and Sandra want to make their golden wedding anniversary both a private, family occasion and one that will involve the whole town in the good causes they are supporting this year.
Sandra said, “it’s a lovely thought that our special year could be put to good use to benefit our charities; we’d welcome any ideas for fundraising and also offers from people to organise events which we’d be happy to attend.”
