On Thursday 25 August Wiltshire’s biggest junior golf tournament will take place at Swindon’s municipal golf course, Broome Manor Golf Complex. It started as a simple junior event 2 years ago with juniors from a couple of local clubs taking part; it has now developed in to a truly national event with junior golfers travelling from far and wide to take part. On the day more than 100 junior golfers (girls and boys) from as young as 7 up to the age of 18 will descend on Broome Manor to play for the Junior Classic Open trophy.
This initiative was the brainchild of Gordon Harker and Lee Hayward (the tournament founders) who decided to do something special to give junior golfers something to aim for. Lee a PGA pro at Broome Manor already spends a huge amount of his time coaching these budding future golfers and got together with Gordon (owner of Bang & Olufsen of Swindon) to create this tournament. Since it started this has grown exponentially and now the event is supported and recognised by Bang & Olufsen of Swindon, David Howell, Nike Golf, WCGP, EGA, Jamega Pro Golf Tour as well as additional sponsorship by Urban18, Edox watches and Jaguar Swindon to name a few.
The day will be a family event with lots of entertainment and attractions including Paul Barrington (former world trick shot champion) putting on a show. Prizes include the Bang & Olufsen Junior Classic Open trophy, Nike Golf merchandise signed by Francesco Molinari, commemorative framed images from Tobias Robins Photography, a place in a Jamega Pro Tour golf tournament and a qualifying place in the Andalucía European Junior Golf Tournament.
This is an incredible initiative that is quite unique particularly as it is held at a council run golf course. Swindon Borough Council fully support the event and the Mayor will be in attendance for the evening presentations.
