Westlea Primary School hosted three days of wheelchair skills training with volunteers from Whizz Kidz and 13 participants from reception to Year 6 who came from Westlea, Robert Le Kyng primary and Crowdys Hill Special School.
Apart from going outside to try out different surfaces and become more wheelchair road safety aware, the youngsters worked in teams to produce their own dance moves incorporating hand and body and weaving patterns with their wheelchairs in the school hall.
Marla Carroll, head of special resources provision at Westlea, said: “James and Trish, the Whizz Kidz trainers, were fantastic and really made the course a lot of fun.
The activities were practical and designed to give children greater wheelchair strength and coordination. They also gave tips on how to check the workings of their wheelchair and to alert parents and carers if they need some attention. The children will be talking about the session for a long time.”
