WES Foderingham was adamant referee Richard Clark got it wrong when he awarded Bradford City a third-minute penalty in Saturday’s clash with the Swindon Town.
The visiting goalkeeper appeared to take the ball in a sliding challenge on Billy Clarke but Clark blew for a spot-kick, giving Alan Sheehan the opportunity to put the Bantams in front early on.
Foderingham made sure the official’s decision didn’t cost Town, as he leapt to his left to palm Sheehan’s penalty to safety, but afterwards he stressed that the referee would admit his mistake when he saw the incident back on TV.
“Well he got it wrong, I don’t think there’s any two ways about it. It was a good challenge, I got 100 per of the ball and when he watches it back I’m sure he’ll agree,” said Foderingham
“It was a good save. I’ve been doing a bit in training about penalties and it’s paid off. Steve Hale takes care of it so I’m comfortable when a situation arises.”
The former Crystal Palace stopper was pleased with his teammates’ resolve during a tense final 20 minutes at Valley Parade, as Bradford threw everything at their guests in search of an equaliser.
“It was difficult. When you come to Bradford it’s always going to be a difficult game. I thought we stood up well. We stood up for the challenge. We defended perfectly,” he said.
“They tried to press but I was surprised a little bit second half, I thought they’d press a little more than what they did. At that stage I think a bit of fear crept into our play; we made it a little bit easier for them and a little bit harder for ourselves. It turned into a bit of a fight but we stood up well.”
Finally, Foderingham had special praise to dish out to Jon Obika, who scored twice on his second debut for Town.
“Jon’s had two chances and scored two goals, which is fantastic. He’s a fantastic finisher and he proved that today,” said the keeper, who worked with Obika in Palace’s youth team when both players were at the start of their fledgling careers.
“A goal debut on your debut if going to help you regardless and he’s got two today. I’m sure fans will be expecting it every week now, so he’s put a bit of pressure on himself, but he was fantastic today.”
