AS TWO early promotion contenders prepare to clash at stadium:MK tomorrow, Swindon boss Mark Cooper has insisted it’s still too early to read anything into the League One standings.
Town sit third, with MK eighth with a game in hand, but only two points separate the two sides who have both shown promotion credentials during the early weeks of the season.
Tuesday’s win at Chesterfield saw Town rocket from ninth to third, which Cooper used as evidence to say not too much can be read into the standings until Christmas at the earliest.
“If you can go from ninth to third in 90 minutes then, for me, you can’t take too much notice of it yet because it hasn’t settled down,” he said.
“When you get towards Christmas you get a true reflection of it.
“It’ the next game, as boring as it sounds, and we’re fully focused on MK Dons and we know if we get a win we’re going to be in the top three.”
While he’s not too interested in the make-up of the league just yet, Cooper can see the bigger clubs in League One beginning to make the moves.
“All the big guns are going to be there and they’re getting there,” he said. “
Preston have won seven on the trot and Sheffield United are now starting to move, Bristol City are there, Peterborough are there and MK Dons are there so all the teams you expect are now up and around it.
“What you’ll see is those bigger teams starting to put runs of results together and we’ll need to do the same if we want to stay there.
“We concentrate on the next game and the best way possible of us getting a positive performance on Saturday, we’re not even thinking about Tuesday or the following Saturday. It’s about this Saturday and making sure we do everything to get a performance.”
