Lau are a traditional three-piece folk band from Scotland.
In the last eighteen months Lau have gone from exciting new boys to undisputed kingpins of the current UK folk scene, with a stunning live performance at the BBC Folk Awards in February. This is a group of dazzling musicianship that promise to deliver a ferociously impressive live show. They won the BBC Radio 2 Award Winning ‘Best Group’.
The band consists of Kris Drever (Guitar and Vocals), Martin Green (Accordion), and Aidan O’Rourke (Fiddle). In the past twelve months they have been nominated for Best Album (Lightweight & Gentlemen) and Best Live Act at BBC Folk Awards 2008, Best Band and Best Album at Scottish Traditional Music Awards in December 2007, and they came runner up in Folk Album of 2008.
According to The Guardian, “On this showing, they should have won Best Live Act as well.”
Lau released their debut album – Lightweights and Gentlemen, to enormous critical acclaim in March 2007, making best-of 2007 lists throughout the folk and indy music press. They have followed this up with a live recording – Lau Live, recorded in Edinburgh in December 2007 and released April 2008 on Navigator Records. Their stratospheric rise seems set to continue as a crammed touring season in 2008 takes Lau’s ferociously impressive live show around the world again.
"Lau are, quite frankly, the best band in the world right now. Last year's debut album 'Lightweights & Gentlemen' saw Kris Drever, Aidan O'Rourke and Martin Green filtering traditional music through sophisticated and daring arrangements to produce a genuinely modern but ultimately timeless folk record. Live, however, is when the band really thrill; playing with the kind of dexterity and intensity that drops jaws." – Channel 4 website.
