The Sullivan School of Dance is about to start rehearsing for their 2010 Wyvern show and if any young children – girls and boys -are interested in learning ballet, tap or jazz, there are some places available.
Founder Jenny Sullivan said, "dance is a brilliant thing for young people to do. It benefits them in so many different ways – not just physical exertion. It's been proven that it's good for children's social skills, discipline, working together, and very good for their coordination."
Some Sullivan students have gone onto tread the boards in the West End and in national touring companies, including former Greendown pupil Simone Mistry-Palmer, who has been in the stage version of High School Musical. She even returned to Freshbrook last year to do a High School Musical masterclass for current students.
It's ten years since Shelene Lester (pictured, right, with dance pupils) joined as a partner in the Sullivan School of Dance and to commemorate that the Wyvern show in April – Lights, Action, Replay – will feature old favourites as well as new routines.
Jenny added, "dance isn't as expensive as people think, it's around £3 a session. It isn't only for those people who are well off, which is why my classes meet in local centres to make them accessible to all children. Parents can pay as they go until they are sure their child wants to continue".
Jenny and Shelene are joined by Gemma Thompson who runs JS Dance ballet, tap and jazz classes in North Swindon.
Mum Caroline Bell, who has two children attending classes in Freshbrook, said, "dance is a great activity to do after school, it's a good way of meeting new friends – both for the children and for mums."
Her six year old daughter Lucy, who does ballet and tap, added, "It's lovely. Tap is noisy and I like doing poses in ballet, and I like playing with the other children."
Six year old Katie Turner said, "I like ballet because we pretend to be animals, and I love being the pony."
Sullivan School of Dance and JS Dance classes are held at Millbrook and St Francis Primary Schools, and community centres around the town. For details call Jenny Sullivan on 872682.
