The State Rooms of Lydiard House will be decked out with traditional decorations, real Christmas trees and floral displays over the next few weeks to celebrate a Victorian Country House Christmas.
The Country House Christmas display, which runs from Saturday 30 November to Sunday 29 December, gives visitors the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of modern day Christmas shopping and see how the festive period was celebrated in the past.
There will be real Christmas trees in the Hall, Library and State Bedroom, decorated with hand-made baubles, scented sachets, cornucopia cones, paper starts and chains.
And in the Dining Room, there will be a lavish Christmas meal laid out, based on old menus belonging to the Bolingbroke family of Lydiard Park. Floral decorations, typical of the style of elegant displays that the Lady of the Manor would have created, will adorn the mantle-pieces and over the door ways to the State Rooms, adding glamour and warmth to the house.
The displays will be specially made for Lydiard House by floristry students from Wiltshire College, Lackham, using from fresh evergreen foliage, gathered from the park.
On Sunday afternoons, visitors can enjoy some additional festive entertainment with live performances from
Christchurch Choir on 1 December, 2pm to 3pm;
Traditional Carol Singing on 8 December, 2pm to 3pm;
The Purton Pear Tree Pealers on 15 December, 2.30pm to 3pm and 22 December, 2pm to 3pm;
The Fourtune Saxaphone Quartet on 22 December, 2pm to 3pm
Alongside the displays, there are Christmas workshops. Visitors can make a traditional wreath using foliage collected from the park on Sunday, 8 December. On Sunday, 15 December, there’s a family session on Peg Dolls and Pomanders, where you can find out more about how families prepared for Christmas in Victorian times and use traditional materials to make three festive decorations to hang on your tree at home.
From Past to Presents, on Sunday 22 December, gives families the chance to find out what children in the past found in their Christmas stockings and make their own stocking filler to take away. Places on workshops must be booked in advance.
Country House Christmas display at Lydiard House will run from 30 November to 29 December and is open Tuesdays to Sundays between 11am and 4pm. Lydiard House is also closed from 24 to 26 December 2013 and 1 January 2014.
