Choose a short or longer trail and find your way around a course of permanent checkpoints
Walk, run or jog at your own pace by yourself, as a pair or in a group. You can also try a mini maze – great fun for children and adults alike.
The permanent orienteering trails were launched by Councillor Keith Williams on Saturday November 16.
Courses start at the main café and range from short (800m or half a mile) to the longer (2.5km, a mile and a half).
The navigation ranges from very easy to moderate difficulty. The short course is very suitable for people with limited mobility.
Instructions and copies of trail maps are available free of charge via the club’s website www.northwilts.org.uk.
North Wiltshire Orienteers (NWO) have produced a special orienteering map, planned the different trails and were responsible for the installation of the permanent checkpoints.
We are grateful for the support of Swindon Sports Forum for a grant of £350 which met most of the materials costs.
Lydiard Park staff have been very supportive of the project and have provided tools and installation advice to club volunteers.
Club volunteers were assisted by Young Offenders engaged in reparation activities in the community.
Ken Stimson, NWO club Secretary said “The permanent courses are available for schools and youth groups.
"It’s a great way for families and individuals to try out orienteering in their own time and if they get bitten by the orienteering bug our club provides regular opportunities for beginners and others to do more”.
Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Strategic Transport and Leisure, said: “I am really pleased we have been able to work with the North Wiltshire Orienteers and provide them with a setting to open their new trails.
"Orienteering is a fun activity which is open to all and has some obvious health benefits. It is an exciting addition to the various activities that already take place at Lydiard Park.”
North Wiltshire Orienteers (NWO) is a community sports club with Club Mark accreditation. Our main aims are to promote participation and enjoyment of our sport.
We run regular evening sessions based at Lydiard Park Academy open to all (members or not), organise events about once a month, run events for schools (eg. School Games) and other Community groups eg. STFC’s "Extra Time" group and the U3A for older people.
